Buy your Christmas ham or turkey early this season

KANAWHA CITY, WV (WOWK) – Buying ham or turkey early can be a good strategy as inventory sells out quickly.

“The stocks are low and it will be quick too, because every time I put out hams at the regular price, they buy them up, so they are scared. Just get out there and start shopping now, ”said Sam Angius, Piggy Wiggly’s Meat Manager.

Meat prices have risen. Honeysuckle White frozen whole turkey sells for around $ 1.50 a pound at Kroger and Walmart and $ 2.00 a pound at Piggy Wiggly.

“The prices are rising because the supply is scarce. I don’t think we’ll run out of turkey or ham, but it’s going to be tight. Don’t wait until the last minute, ”said Rick Joseph, owner of Piggly Wiggly.

Some people, like Patricia Sisson, have already bought their holiday meat to freeze.

“I shop early because I don’t want to be caught by the crowd,” says Patricia Sisson, a customer.

Piggly Wiggly owner Rick Joseph says there are multiple reasons for shortages and price increases.

“Packaging is a problem. Don’t get the plastic. I’m even having trouble getting cardboard for the boxes. The work situation, many companies have work problems processing this food, ”said Joseph.

Joseph says he expects the shortage to continue for the next several months.
