Senator Ekweremadu was arrested on the way to Turkey – prosecutors

Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, and Beatrice, his wife, were arrested en route to Istanbul, Turkey.

Prosecutors said so at a magistrates’ court in Uxbridge, UK, where Ekweremadu and his wife were charged with attempted organ harvesting.

The Daily Trust had reported how the Metropolitan Police arrested the Nigerian couple for attempting to harvest the organ of an unidentified child.

When he was charged on Thursday, the court refused to grant him bail but ordered him to remain in custody until July 7.

In a statement confirming the arrest, the Metropolitan Police said the couple were taken to court on Thursday following an investigation by the police special team.

ARISE TV quoted prosecutors as telling the court the couple had been arrested at Heathrow Airport en route to Istanbul, Turkey.

According to prosecutors, it is believed that they were on their way to obtain another organ as they were unable to harvest the boy’s organ.

Prosecutors are also said to have told the court that the Ekweremadus have a daughter who has kidney disease and has been on dialysis for some time.

They told the court the plan was to use one of the boy’s organs on their daughter, who appears to need a kidney transplant.
